Making Art Every Day + Telling the Truth with Elena Brower

Takeyah meditating in National ArboretumA little bit over a year ago, I took Elena Brower’s Art of  Attention workshop in Washington, DC. Aside from hearing about her heart-centered work, I did a tiny, tiny, mini, mini practice with her when 10,000 yogis gathered for Yoga At the Great Lawn (Y@GL) in Central Park, NYC (which got rain out  #sniffle).

When Faith Hunter (my teacher) announced that she was hosting a workshop with Elena, I was on it. I’ll just say that the practice with Elena was powerful. It provided tools and tidbits for showing up on the mat and in life.

You’ll see from the video, that this interview will also touch on the art of paying attention, too! Turn up the volume on your computer.

Key gems from the practice + our chat:

  • Make art of your every day experiences.
  • Tell the truth.
  • Go home and be amazing with your family.
  • Put two boys in your inspiration toolbox.

How do you make art of your everyday experiences? Post your comment below.

Train Spiritually. Practice Consciously. Act Wholeheartedly. Manifest.

I manifest. I am a manifestor. I am manifesting.

That’s how I began my comment to Marie Forleo‘s Manifesting 101 post + video with Gabrielle Bernstein. I’ve been asked about manifestation a LOT. Even my friend Moses of I Love Yoga recently encouraged me to share more about manifestation and how I manifest.

Takeyah Young at Itsukushima Temple Tori I had a LOT to say in response to Marie’s post. Here’s what I shared…

When I was in grad school, I was SO over my advisor, my department and my not wanting to be in the lab all day. So I told mySelf (+ out loud on the streets of Adams Morgan in DC), “I will not be here in the fall”. I wanted to be and do something different.

At the time, I wasn’t sure what that would look like. I was just very clear…and …did I say over it?! So, I sought out opportunities to do something different, graduation or not. A couple months later, I was invited to teach in Japan. [#score] It almost didn’t happen. My invite was lost in the mail. I got my final invite by email saying that I had to decide within the next day if I wanted to go.

I immediately put things into high gear, started gathering all the documents, got my physical exams, applied for the visas and went to Japan. I ended up spending 2 years there. I eventually came back and completed my degree. However, I had a LOT more clarity about ME, my life and the type of things I enjoyed doing.

Like Gabby was suggesting, as you manifest you end up getting a whole bunch more than you planned. I got clarity, I got to travel a whole bunch more, I made some life long friends, my Japanese got way better and I realized I was a great educator.

Manifestation includes the mental and spiritual work PLUS action in service of your desires + the willingness to accept when the Universe drops that blessing in your lap. Sometimes that blessing floats down like a feather. Sometimes it falls into your lap like stacks of books. Either way, be ready to carry it.

::

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I’m an engineer by training, educator in practice, + entrepreneur at heartTM. And as I wrote my response to the manifestation post, I thought about the various components of my journey. I realized that my manifestation is comprised of training my mind to process things differently, putting tools into practice, and taking heart centered action.

How do you manifest? What have you manifested recently? Please share your comments below.

How P90X Reminded Me About Growth + Affirmed My Core

Come stretch your body + mind with Takeyah. I first heard about P90X during my yoga teacher training. Shawna of Cocoa Mode, who was in my YTT class, asked us if we heard of this thing called P90X. Of course back then, I hadn’t. However, the fact that this new fitness system got men to practice yoga (one of the topics that we talked about during our training), made it sound interesting.

Since that convo, I have seen many commercials and seen the results on YouTube. I even recommended that a friend sign up as a Beach Body Coach because he often talked about how great it was for him as he trained for a trialthalon.

I tried P90X for the first time last summer. Recently though, I wanted to see what all the hype was about. I decided to do a hybrid of Yoga + P90X. I’m still at the beginning of this hybrid, but so far I’ve gotten several messages. The first message wasn’t even about the physical practice.

In addition to embracing the pain that sometimes comes with growth, the physical practice reminded me of something else. My core is much stronger than I thought it was. When I thought about doing abdominal work, I honestly thought Ab Ripper X would be the toughest part. It turned out to be the simplest for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a workout.

I realized acknowledged that the work I’ve been doing for the past 12 years (yoga, self-help, coaching, etc.) has prepared me for where I am right now. I have what it takes to go to the next level. I am ready!

I’d love to hear about your journey. Post  in the comments below.

What is part of your next phase of growth?

What experiences have prepared you for that next phase?

What ideas do you plan to embrace as a part of that journey?
